construction INTERVIEW:

Kent County Land Bank Authority

An Interview with David de Velder, Director of Real Estate Development at Kent County Land Bank Authority

Q: What did Next Step do?
A: On a couple homes, they general contracted the whole project, doing everything except specialized trades, electrical, plumbing, etc., which is very rare today. That really helps control costs so they’re able to come in at a much more aggressive price on labor intensive type homes.

Q: Describe their quality of work.
A: You go in their houses and you cannot tell any difference between them and our premier GC’s because of the extensiveness of their rehab, the quality of work and their construction knowledge.

Q: What makes you excited about Next Step?
A: Not only is Next Step restoring a lot of people’s lives, but a lot of the work they do is restoring, so that theme is really powerful.

Scott is such an incredible businessman and entrepreneur. He has such a heart. He instills people with compassion. He has a site supervisor who came from really high-end building so they really knew what they were doing and they have good employees to run it.

Q: What sets Next Step apart from other nonprofits?
A: They’re intellectual capacity and wide range of services. They do more on the manufacturing and construction side to provide employees with job training, empowerment and spiritual support.

“You cannot tell any difference between them and our premier GC’s because of the quality of work and their construction knowledge.” – David de Velder
