about us: stories

I went to prison and when I got out, no one wanted to hire me. I started working for $7.50 an hour and it was hard because more than half my check was going towards gas.

When I started at Next Step, the jobs here were different than I was used to, but I picked up on them right away. I helped with production and then I mowed lawns. I actually liked it!

Next Step helped build up my self-esteem and get back on my feet. It’s not a forever job, but it’s an opportunity to take someone who’s down and bring them back up. I was here for about eight months before I got a job as an insurance agent. Next Step gave really good job references.

Without Next Step, I wouldn’t be where I’m at right now. I’d be struggling. There was a time when I couldn’t wake up with a smile on my face. I wake up with a smile now. I have my kids back. I’ve got a job. I’ve got my family. I’ve got love. I’ve got Jesus. My journey doesn’t end here. I know there’s so much more out there.
